Sticky Sesame Tofu with Broccoli

Pan-seared and broiled tofu with tender broccoli in a sticky, garlicky sesame sauce that comes together in 30 minutes.

30 min

Ingredients

  • 1 block Super Firm Tofu
  • 4 cups Broccoli
  • 4 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 4 tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 3 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 tsp Fresh Ginger
  • 1 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil
  • ¼ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp Sesame Seeds
  • 2 whole Green Onions

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in ⅓ cup water. Keep the starch slurry separate for now.
  2. Position the top oven rack about 6 inches from the broiler element and preheat the broiler to 500°F. At the same time, preheat a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Flick a few drops of water into the skillet — if they bead and dance, it is ready. Arrange the tofu pieces in a single layer in the skillet without moving them. Turn off the burner, then carefully transfer the skillet to the oven and broil until the tops are golden brown, 7 to 10 minutes.
  4. Carefully remove the skillet from the oven using oven mitts, flip each piece of tofu, and return to the broiler for another 6 to 8 minutes, until the second side is golden.
  5. Transfer the skillet to the stovetop over medium-low heat. Keep an oven mitt on the handle as a reminder it is hot. Stir the cornstarch slurry into the sauce, then pour the sauce over the tofu. Add the broccoli florets to the pan.
  6. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the broccoli is fork-tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions and serve immediately.
