General Tso's Tofu
Crispy pan-fried tofu tossed in a sweet, savory, and spicy General Tso's sauce, served over fluffy white rice.
30 min
Ingredients
- 1 block Firm Tofu
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 tbsp Cornstarch
- 3 tbsp Avocado Oil
- ¾ cup Vegetable Broth
- ¼ cup Soy Sauce
- 2 ½ tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar
- 1 tbsp Vegan Hoisin Sauce
- ½ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
- 4 cloves Garlic
- 1 tbsp Fresh Ginger
- 1 ½ tsp Toasted Sesame Oil
- 2 tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- ¼ cup Green Onions
Instructions
- In a large bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 1 tbsp soy sauce. Sprinkle over 2 tbsp cornstarch in two additions, tossing gently between each until evenly coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the vegetable broth, ¼ cup soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, and red pepper flakes. In a separate small bowl, stir the remaining 1 tbsp cornstarch into ¼ cup warm water until smooth. Set both aside.
- Heat avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu in a single layer and cook, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy on all sides, about 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- In the same skillet over medium heat, add the garlic, ginger, and a little extra oil if needed. Sauté for 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour in the sauce mixture and bring to a boil. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and whisk to combine. Simmer, stirring often, for 3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Add the crispy tofu and sesame oil to the skillet. Toss to coat evenly in the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve over white rice and top with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds.
