Crispy Orange Tofu

Ultra-crispy tofu cubes tossed in a tangy, sweet orange sauce with garlic and ginger, inspired by classic orange chicken.

30 min

Ingredients

  • 1 block Firm Tofu
  • 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp Avocado Oil
  • ⅔ cup Orange Juice
  • 3 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 2 ½ tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Orange Zest
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 tsp Fresh Ginger
  • ½ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 2 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil

Instructions

  1. Pat the pressed tofu dry and cut into 1-inch cubes. In a large bowl, toss tofu with 1 tbsp soy sauce. Sprinkle over the cornstarch in two additions, tossing to coat evenly after each.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, 3 tbsp soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and orange zest until the sugar dissolves. Set aside.
  3. Heat 3 tbsp avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu in a single layer and fry for 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy on all sides. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet over medium heat, add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant, adding a small splash of oil if needed.
  5. Pour the orange sauce into the skillet and bring to a boil. In a small bowl, stir together ¼ cup warm water and 1 tbsp cornstarch until smooth, then whisk into the sauce. Simmer, stirring often, for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened.
  6. Add the crispy tofu back to the skillet along with the sesame oil. Toss until every piece is well coated. Season with salt to taste.
  7. Serve immediately over steamed rice.
