Crispy Orange Tofu
Ultra-crispy tofu cubes tossed in a tangy, sweet orange sauce with garlic and ginger, inspired by classic orange chicken.
30 min
Ingredients
- 1 block Firm Tofu
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 tbsp Cornstarch
- 3 tbsp Avocado Oil
- ⅔ cup Orange Juice
- 3 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 2 ½ tbsp Rice Vinegar
- 1 tsp Orange Zest
- 4 cloves Garlic
- 1 tsp Fresh Ginger
- ½ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
- 2 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil
Instructions
- Pat the pressed tofu dry and cut into 1-inch cubes. In a large bowl, toss tofu with 1 tbsp soy sauce. Sprinkle over the cornstarch in two additions, tossing to coat evenly after each.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, 3 tbsp soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and orange zest until the sugar dissolves. Set aside.
- Heat 3 tbsp avocado oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu in a single layer and fry for 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy on all sides. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
- In the same skillet over medium heat, add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes. Sauté for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant, adding a small splash of oil if needed.
- Pour the orange sauce into the skillet and bring to a boil. In a small bowl, stir together ¼ cup warm water and 1 tbsp cornstarch until smooth, then whisk into the sauce. Simmer, stirring often, for 3 to 4 minutes until thickened.
- Add the crispy tofu back to the skillet along with the sesame oil. Toss until every piece is well coated. Season with salt to taste.
- Serve immediately over steamed rice.
