Barbecue Tempeh

Steamed and pan-fried tempeh strips coated in smoky, sweet, and tangy barbecue sauce for a quick and satisfying plant-based entree.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages (8 oz each) Tempeh
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • ¾ cup Barbecue Sauce

Instructions

  1. Slice the tempeh into 1/2-inch thick strips.
  2. Place the tempeh strips in a steamer basket over a saucepan with a few inches of water. Bring to a boil, cover, and steam for 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Arrange the steamed tempeh in a single layer and cook for 4 minutes until golden brown on the bottom.
  4. Flip each piece of tempeh and cook for 3 more minutes until seared on the second side.
  5. Pour in the barbecue sauce and stir to coat all the tempeh. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce is heated through and the tempeh is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
